Art Show Time: Unreasonable Expectations

Tempera paint on a cotton canvas on a wooden frame.
If you follow me on Twitter, you may remember that late last week I spent a whole bunch of time painting, and that I had my piece up in a gallery*.

This is the painting that ate up about 6 hours of my life to make, and about another 3 to go to the exhibition opening. I haven't painted anything since last May/June, and I had never worked on a canvas before, so it was a pretty steep remembering/learning curve for me, but I am pretty happy with how it turned out. I'm slightly annoyed with myself because I think I could have blended with much more subtlety, it's not very fair of me to compare the painting to the pencil sketch though. I have always been far more comfortable in pencil, and this one had turned out spectacularly, so it created pretty huge expectations in my mind.

Do you create unreasonable expectations for yourself?

Love,
Rosie

*For full clarity, my entire class had their project shown, so it's not like I was chosen for it or anything like that.

  1. I think you did a good job, and please keep on sharing whenever you finish a work of art, it's as cool and as interesting as outfits ;)
It's inherent to most humans to create absurd expectations, or maybe that's just me hoping I'm not a freak, because I do that pretty much every single day :D
    Have a lovely day!

  2. I do that all the time and sometimes I do the opposite, I think something will be totally dreadful but it turns out nice. I think it's in human nature for our minds to exaggerate one way or another. :D

  3. Unreasonable expectations? All the time. We're women. That's what we do.

I like your artwork. It's never easy jumping into a new medium. I'm only starting to get comfortable on photoshop now after over a year of goofing around and I've never painted on an actual canvas. Good for you for trying. You'll feel more confident next time.

  4. All the time! I always feel like I can do more! It's good to push yourself, but I also think it's important to just be! You did a beautiful job and for your first time on canvs, I think you nailed it!
